I'm Crystal Tan.

I am a watercolour artist and the natural world around me gives me all the inspiration I need for painting. I live near Melbourne, Australia. About 80km east in a beautiful place called the Yarra Valley, inspired by nature and my surroundings. My background as a yoga teacher brings mindfulness, presence, a sense of flow, letting go and joyfulness into my art practice. And I try to embody that into my paintings.

Every time Mother’s Day roll by, I feel there’s a pressure in the atmosphere to make this the best day ever for mums because of course, we all know, mums are the best! We do it all. We hold everything and everyone together. We are just the bomb. I appreciate all the wonderful effort we put into this day. And it should be warranted. I had a very low effort slow wonderful day where my kids seem to be extra nice to me, breakfast in bed, getting their chores done without nagging, and generally feeling appreciated!

Happy Mother’s Day to my lovely mum. And thank u to my kids who made me a mum. This perhaps is my most favourite season of motherhood after so many years. It’s finally less intense and perhaps even a little cruisey, and we can enjoy each other as well as leave each other alone when we need to!

Grateful for mothers everywhere!

An iris kind of morning 💜
Possibly one of my last floral paintings for a little while… because from next week, I’ll be diving deep into creating my online landscape course. Time to gently shift gears, change the scenery, and pour my energy into landscapes for the season ahead.

But for now, I’m soaking up these soft, expressive irises and enjoying every brushstroke. ✨

This month’s theme was planning — how much do we really need it, and when does it start to hold us back? We explored the pros and cons together, then painted two pieces:
one with planning (sketching + colour swatching), and one completely intuitive.

Afterwards, we reflected on both — which outcome we preferred, and more interestingly, which process felt better. As always, the answers were beautifully varied 💭

Autumn is truly here. Been busy with yoga teaching in the last few days in this beautiful town called marysville and not painting as much. But feeling good about this little break, as a break is always needed for a refuel, renewal.

Hey friends! Just wanted to make a post here to say thank you so much for all of you who have purchased FLOW-IN during this past launch week. I have put years of watercolour floral painting experience into this course and laid out, hopefully what I believe is one of the best method that show you how to paint loose effortless watercolour florals. I can’t wait to see all your beautiful paintings from the lessons in FLOW IN!

In the meantime, what’s with this photo? Well I actually had make a last min trip to back to Singapore for a dear uncle’a funeral. Which was sad but also a long time coming as he’s been ill for a very long time. And manage to spend some days here in hot sweaty Singapore with family and friends and food!

Yesterday I passed by the Starbucks I worked at (my first part time job while at Uni) in 1997. Which was the 1st Starbucks in Singapore. It was the busiest most insane Starbucks and my salary was $4.50 an hr (which was actually one of the higher paid F&B places! MacDonald was paying $2.80!) and had my formative youth learning and growing here at this Starbucks.

To walk by this place 29 years later and it’s still standing!! To reminisce my youth. And think about where I’ve been and where I am today. I feel so grateful and blessed.

Thank you to my wonderful students & collectors who make my artist life possible. I’ll be back in the studio later this week. In the meantime, happy painting!!!!
